Larry Doby, byname of Lawrence Eugene Doby, (born Dec. 13, 1923, Camden, S.C., U.S.—died June 18, 2003, Montclair, N.J.), American baseball participant, the second African American participant within the main leagues and the primary within the American League when he joined the Cleveland Indians in 1947.

The son of a semipro baseball participant, Doby excelled at baseball, basketball, and soccerincomes an athletic scholarship to Long Island University in New York. Doby performed for the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League in 1942 and 1943 earlier than enlisting within the U.S. Navy. He returned to the Newark Eagles for the 1946 and 1947 seasons till Bill Veeck signed him to play with the Cleveland Indians on the finish of the 1947 season. Doby, whose personal father had died when he was 8 years outdated, spoke of Veeck as a second father. He then went on to educate for the Montreal Expos, Indians, and White Sox, earlier than Veeck made him the White Sox supervisor in 1978, the second African American main league supervisor. Doby was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1998.
