George Steinbrenner, in full George Martin Steinbrenner III, (born July 4, 1930, Rocky River, Ohio, U.S.—died July 13, 2010, Tampa, Florida), American businessman and principal proprietor of the New York Yankees (1973–2010). His exacting strategies and infrequently bellicose perspective established him as some of the controversial personalities in main league baseball. Though he was typically criticized, beneath his possession the Yankees turned one of many dominant groups in baseball and some of the invaluable franchises in sports activities.

Steinbrenner was raised in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. After attending Culver Military Academy (1944–48), a preparatory college in Indiana, he earned a bachelor’s diploma in English (1952) from Williams College in Massachusetts. Upon commencement he enlisted within the U.S. Air Force and served for 2 years. He later obtained a grasp’s diploma in bodily schooling from The Ohio State University (1955) and was an assistant coach for the soccer groups at Northwestern and Purdue universities.

In 1957 Steinbrenner went to work for his father’s delivery firm. There he served in varied capacities till 1967, when he acquired the American Shipbuilding Company, which quickly subsumed the household enterprise. After a number of abortive makes an attempt to amass an expert sports activities franchise, Steinbrenner efficiently engineered the acquisition of the New York Yankees for $10.3 million in 1973. Though he had vowed to distance himself from the quotidian actions of the staff, the domineering tendencies for which he would turn into notorious—and that may earn him the nickname “the Boss”—first asserted themselves through the season opener when he demanded that a number of gamers minimize their lengthy hair.

In 1974 Steinbrenner was indicted for obstruction of justice and for conspiring to make unlawful contributions to U.S. Pres. Richard Nixon’s reelection marketing campaign. He was convicted and, consequently, suspended from main league baseball till 1976. That 12 months the Yankees superior to the World Series, although they have been in the end defeated. However, they received the next two World Series, each performed in opposition to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Under Steinbrenner’s possession the Yankees performed in seven different World Series, successful 5 titles (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009). In 2002 he expanded the Yankee empire with the creation of the Yankee Entertainment and Sports (YES) Network, a tv channel dedicated to protection of the staff.

While partially credited with the success of the Yankees, Steinbrenner remained a divisive determine, instituting stringent laws relating to the looks of his gamersregularly criticizing gamers to the press, and indulging in public spats with members of his workers. (He fired supervisor Billy Martin 5 separate instances.) Public disapproval of such behaviour was compounded by Steinbrenner’s willingness to pay his gamers exorbitantly, a observe broadly blamed for escalating salaries within the main leagues. In 1990 Steinbrenner was banned from baseball for all times after mounting a smear marketing campaign in opposition to a participant with whom he was arguing. Though the ban was lifted in 1993, adverse characterizations continued to dominate his press protection, and he was even featured in flamboyant caricature on the hit tv present Seinfeld. Though they subsided in later years, his histrionics have been incessantly rehashed by the press whilst he turned over management of the staff to his sons in 2008.
