 Earl Lloyd biography

Earl Lloyd, in full Earl Francis Lloyd, (born April 3, 1928, Alexandria, Virginia, U.S.—died February 26, 2015, Crossville, Tennessee), basketball participant who was the primary African American to play within the National Basketball Association (NBA).

In the spring of 1950 Lloyd, who performed collegiate basketball at West Virginia State College, was the second black participant to be drafted by an NBA workforce; Chuck Cooper had been chosen by the Boston Celtics just a few picks earlier than Lloyd’s choice by the Washington Capitols. Nate ("Sweetwater") Clifton, nevertheless, was the primary African American to signal an NBA contract, becoming a member of the New York Knicks that summer time. The schedule resulted in Lloyd being the primary black participant to take the courtroom in an NBA sport, on October 31, 1950. He scored six factors in that first sport.

Lloyd loved a protracted profession within the NBA and continued his pioneering function as a coach. After a quick stint within the military, he returned to the NBA, the place he was a key participant for the Syracuse Nationals (1952–58), serving to the workforce win the championship in 1955. He completed his enjoying profession with the Detroit Pistons (1958–60). He later rejoined the Pistons as the primary African American assistant coach (1968–70) within the league and the second African American head coach (1971–72). He additionally labored as a scout for the Pistons. In 2003 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
