 Mel Ott biography

Mel Ott, in full Melvin Thomas Ott, additionally referred to as Master Melvin, (born March 2, 1909, Gretna, La., U.S.—died Nov. 21, 1958, New Orleans, La.), American skilled baseball participant, supervisor, and broadcaster who performed his whole 22-year profession with the New York Giants (1926–47).

Ott had a novel batting stance with a particularly excessive and extended leg-kick, which helped the slight, 5-foot 9-inch (1.75-metre) outfielder generate energy. New York Giants supervisor John McGraw referred to as him a “natural hitter” when he first noticed Ott as a 16-year-old. The left-handed-batting Ott led or tied for the league lead in dwelling runs on six events and was the primary National League participant to hit over 500 dwelling runs. He was chosen to the All-Star group 11 instances.

The easygoing Ott was extraordinarily in style with followers. In addition to his excellent taking part in profession, he was the player-manager for the Giants from 1942 to 1947 and the full-time supervisor in 1948. He was not very profitableby no means ending larger than third place in seven seasons. (Rival supervisor Leo Durocher is famously credited with equating Ott’s geniality together with his lack of success, although the pithy “nice guys finish last” was from all indications a sportswriter’s paraphrase.) Ott additionally managed within the minor leagues after he resigned from the Giants and labored for 3 seasons as a broadcaster for the Detroit Tigers within the late Nineteen Fifties. He died at age 49 from accidents suffered in an car accident. Ott was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1951.
