 Roy Campanella biography

Roy Campanella, byname Campy, (born Nov. 19, 1921, Homestead, Pa., U.S.—died June 26, 1993, Woodland Hills, close to Los Angeles, Calif.), American baseball participant, an expert National League catcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, whose profession was minimize quick because of an car accident.

Campanella started enjoying semiprofessional baseball on the Philadelphia sandlots when he was 13, and at 15 he was signed to play within the Negro leagues. (Campanella’s father was of Italian descent, and his mom was African American.) Campanella’s abilities garnered the eye of Brooklyn Dodgers common supervisor Branch Rickey. Attempting to combine main league baseball, Rickey signed gamers corresponding to Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe, and Campanella to the Dodgers franchise, and in 1946 Campanella started enjoying for a Dodgers farm group in Nashua, New Hampshire. Campanella moved as much as the majors in 1948 and thereby turned one of many first black gamers to interrupt baseball’s color bar. He was the common catcher for the Dodgers from 1949 till an car accident after the 1957 season left him paralyzed.

During his enjoying profession he was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player thrice (1951, 1953, and 1955) and was acknowledged as the most effective fielding catcher within the league within the Nineteen Fifties. He was additionally recognized for his hitting and in 1953 led the league in runs batted in (142) and hit 41 residence runs. He performed in 5 World Series (1949, 1952–53, and 1955–56). His autobiography, It’s Good to Be Alive, was printed in 1959. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.
